Coffee machine without germs: how to clean it successfully

Cleaning a fully automatic coffee machine: Why regular care is so important - and how dry steam even gets rid of dust mites in the coffee machine

For many people, coffee is part of their daily ritual. This makes it all the more important that the fully automatic coffee machine is hygienically clean - after all, water runs through it every day, coffee residues are processed and damp residues accumulate in dark corners. But many people don't know this: There are plenty of germs lurking in fully automatic coffee machines. According to a study, the water tank, hoses and nozzles are particularly affected. The brewing group is also a hotspot for microbial contamination. Over time, it can even develop mold. And that's not all - pests such as dust mites can also settle in the coffee machine, especially if coffee beans or coffee powder are stored openly nearby.

For carefree and healthy coffee enjoyment, it is therefore essential to clean the fully automatic coffee machine regularly. One particularly effective method is cleaning with dry steam. Why does it work so well? The hot steam reaches even hard-to-reach areas and has a disinfecting effect at the same time - all without using any chemical cleaning agents. The combination of temperature, pressure and minimal use of moisture makes this method particularly thorough and gentle on materials.

What are flour mites - and how do they get into the coffee machine?

Flour mites are tiny pests that feed on starchy foods - especially flour, oatmeal, rice or even coffee powder. If you store your coffee powder open or in poorly sealed containers, you run the risk of flour mites settling in. The animals are only around 0.3 to 0.6 millimeters in size, so they are barely visible to the naked eye. Nevertheless, they leave behind fine dust, an unpleasant odor and can even cause allergic reactions. Once the mites have made themselves at home in the fully automatic coffee machine - for example in the bean chute or drip tray - thorough cleaning is essential.

A clear case for dry steam appliances: the hot steam not only kills germs and bacteria, but also reliably eliminates pests such as flour mites. The heat (often over 100 °C at the exit point) destroys the mites and their eggs without having to treat the sensitive internal parts of the machine with aggressive cleaning agents.

How cleaning with dry steam works

Dry steam appliances such as the "Micro Cleaner" from the manufacturer Medeco are based on the idea of so-called micro dry steam. Water is heated to over 180 degrees Celsius and expelled from the handpiece at high pressure (up to 9 bar). The resulting steam contains only around 5 percent water - hence the name "dry steam". This means that hardly any moisture remains in the machine, which prevents the formation of mold or corrosion. At the same time, the high pressure ensures that even stubborn dirt and residues are removed - even in nooks and crannies such as the brew group, between seals or in the fine hoses.

There are a variety of attachments for targeted use, such as spot jet nozzles, brushes or narrow nozzle attachments that reach into every crevice. This means that even hard-to-reach areas such as the bottom of the water tank or the narrow channels for the coffee spout can be cleaned.

Cleaning fully automatic coffee machines - chemical-free and sustainable

Another advantage of the dry steam cleaner is that it is chemical-free. Many commercially available cleaning tablets or powders contain aggressive ingredients that dissolve dirt and limescale, but can also leave behind residues. These can have a negative effect on the taste of the coffee - and can even cause health problems in sensitive people. If you want to clean your fully automatic coffee machine without using chemicals, a micro steam cleaner is therefore the best choice. The coffee remains pure in taste - and the good feeling of drinking hygienically is free on top.

Thermal disinfection - what's behind it?

In addition to its cleaning power, thermal disinfection is a key advantage of dry steam. "Due to the high outlet temperature of up to 100 degrees Celsius, around 99.99 percent of all mold, bacteria and viruses that can accumulate in a coffee machine are rendered harmless," explains Fritz Pattis, founder of the Green Cleaning concept. Most microorganisms die at temperatures as low as 60 degrees - so you're on the safe side with dry steam. And the best thing is that disinfection takes place automatically during the cleaning process, without the need for additional agents or work steps.

Regular thermal cleaning is particularly recommended for fully automatic coffee machines that are used daily - ideally once a week or at least every two weeks. This prevents bacteria, mold or even pests such as flour mites from settling in permanently.

What should you pay attention to when cleaning?

  1. Removing and cleaning the brew group: Many modern fully automatic machines allow the brew group to be removed. This should be cleaned regularly with dry steam or warm water.

  2. Clean the water tank thoroughly: Biofilms can form in the tank. Dry steam helps to disinfect the base and corners.

  3. Clean the drip tray and coffee grounds container: Damp coffee residues are a breeding ground for germs - these parts should be emptied regularly and treated with hot steam.

  4. Don't forget the coffee spout and hoses: Residue also collects here over time - targeted cleaning with narrow steam nozzles is ideal.

  5. Inspect the bean chute and powder compartment: These areas should be treated with particular care, especially if they are infested with flour mites.

Conclusion: Clean coffee enjoyment starts with the machine

If you clean your fully automatic coffee machine regularly and thoroughly, you not only benefit from a better taste, but also protect your health. Germs, mold and even flour mites can spread quickly in poorly maintained machines - and the risk increases with every day that nothing is cleaned. Cleaning with dry steam is an effective, environmentally friendly and simple method of keeping your fully automatic machine hygienically clean - without any chemicals.

So: It's better to clean the fully automatic coffee machine more often - for lasting enjoyment without unwanted surprises.
